Our Core Beliefs

Fernley STEM Council Meetings:

Second Wednesday of each month at 4:00pm, Parent Resource Center (portable nearest school) at Cottonwood Elementary School

We are a group of individuals with a passion for improving our community through informal and formal education.  We are parents and grandparents who happen to be teachers, engineers, business owners, politicians, realtors, anthropologists, chemists, microbiologists, quilters, wood-workers who have a desire to serve our community.  We are not an exclusive group, there are no formal requirements for membership.

Our Vision

Increase community awareness of professional, technical, and educational opportunities and the science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) capacity of the workforce in Fernley, Nevada through partnerships with Lyon County School District, University of Nevada, Reno, Western Nevada College, City of Fernley, local business partners, and others.

  • The community of Fernley desires to build and maintain a talented local workforce, and it is capable and ready to meet industry demands.
  • Education is the key to opening doors and building a talented workforce, and this education needs to be both formal and informal (e.g., internships, families, and experiences).
  • The learning community includes all of our residents.
  • The promotion of good work ethics is critical to the success of individuals and businesses.
  • It is important to remain culturally responsive, adaptive, and aware while embracing and utilizing diversity.

The Fernley STEM Council was founded in 2013 by individuals who envisioned the celebration of science, technology, engineering and mathematics as a community in the form of a “giant science fair”.  From that dream the Fernley STEM Council was born to support not only the annual Fernley STEM Festival, but also other STEM initiatives in our community.
